Aircraft Seat Fireblocking: What Owners Should Know Before Reupholstery

Home Our Blog Aircraft Seat Fireblocking: What Owners Should Know Before Reupholstery

Choosing new aircraft upholstery usually begins with the details you can see and feel: color, texture, stitching, and comfort. Beneath the covering, however, the cushion’s construction also deserves attention. Seat fireblocking is part of that discussion, particularly when a refurbishment involves changes to existing cushion materials.

We offer seat fireblocking among our aircraft interior services. Addressing it during project planning helps connect your design preferences with the technical considerations that apply to your seating.

Understand the Purpose of Fireblocking

A fireblocking layer surrounds the cushion’s foam core with highly fire-resistant material. Its purpose is to delay the foam’s involvement in a fire by providing a protective barrier beneath the outer upholstery.

That function differs from the decorative covering’s role. Selecting an attractive leather or fabric is one decision; determining the appropriate cushion construction is another. Both need to be considered within the seating project.

Fireblocking does not make a seat fireproof. It is a protective measure whose performance depends on the materials and construction of the cushion assembly.

Discuss the Complete Cushion Assembly

When requesting upholstery work, explain whether you want to replace only the outer covering or also change the cushioning. Bring up concerns about comfort, shape, or existing wear before the scope is finalized.

The foam, covering, and fireblocking material, where used, form a combination that matters when evaluating the cushion. Seams and closures also play a role. For that reason, a material’s individual characteristics do not tell the whole story about the finished assembly.

Ask how your proposed changes relate to the existing seat design and what supporting information is needed.

Bring Available Seating Records

Provide your aircraft’s make and model, along with any available seat identification, previous refurbishment records, or cushion documentation. These details help establish what is already installed and what has been changed.

If the aircraft has an unfamiliar service history, say so early. Identifying gaps at the beginning allows them to become part of the planning conversation.

Requirements should be evaluated for the particular aircraft and seating configuration. Avoid assuming that another owner’s upholstery project provides a direct template for yours.

Include Documentation in the Project Scope

Before approving work, discuss the materials, any applicable testing or substantiation, and the documentation that will accompany the completed project. Clarify how these considerations may affect material selection and scheduling.

You can still explore the colors and textures that make the cabin personal while those details are being reviewed. The objective is a coordinated plan that accounts for both the visible upholstery and the construction beneath it.

A successful seating update starts with informed choices throughout the cushion assembly. To discuss upholstery and seat fireblocking as part of your aircraft’s refurbishment, contact Arizona Aircraft Interior Designs, Inc.
